Few winemakers can boast the privilege of crafting their wines amidst the dramatic landscapes of an active volcano!

For several years now, Anna Martens and Eric Narioo of Vino di Anna have been creating singular, distinctive wines using the indigenous grapes grown on the high-altitude slopes of Mt Etna, Sicily.

The grapes, ranging from 60-100 years old, are organically grown, vinification is mostly traditional winemaking techniques, including qvevri (clay vessels) and Palmento (old Sicilian cellar buildings). Minimal intervention, low sulfur, and no fining or filtration. The wines speak of their terroir, and sing with a joyous alchemy of expression and focus.

Palmento Rosso, while light and juicy, has the pronounced fruit intensity of great Etna red: cherries, brambly wild raspberry, macerated strawberries. There are floral notes, along with distinctive minerality indicative of the volcanic terroir. Acidity is present and well-integrated, the finish is persistent and refreshing.

Indigenous to Mt Etna, the Nerello Mascalese grape is capable of making truly profound wines and is fast becoming one of the most sought-after in the world. It makes up 90% of this blend, along with small percentages of Nerello Cappuccio (another indigenous red grape) and white grapes Grecanico and Minnella Bianca, which are also grown on their vineyards. The final 5% is white Carricante, fermented separately and added to the final blend in March 2023 to bring a floral freshness to the wine.
